About Teri

I write short stories, essays, novels, books for young readers — and lots of appellate briefs.

I believe, with John Updike, that the purpose of literature is to expand our sympathies, and I believe, with the Amerian Civil Liberties Union, that when the rights of a society’s most vulnerable members are imperiled, everyone’s rights are in danger.

My children’s books include The Girl from the Tar Paper School (Abrams Books for Young Readers), Guilty? (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt) and Rivka’s Way (Cricket Books). I also write for the Jake Maddox series (Capstone Kids!) and I ghostwrite for the Boxcar Children series. I am currently working on a middle grade novel.

My essays for adults have appeared in The Recorder (San Francisco’s Legal Newspaper), Education Week, Jewish Currents, and other periodicals. My essay “The Best Interests of the Child,” was included in Reaching for the Bar: Stories of Women at all Stages of their Law Careers, published by Kaplan Books. My nonfiction for children has appeared in Scholastic’s Scope Magazine.

My short stories for adults have appeared in The Iowa Review, American Literary Review, and other periodicals. My short stories for children have appeared in Cricket Magazine.

My law practice is currently limited to appeals. I accept clients only through the Appellate Defenders Inc. and The First District Appellate Project, non-profit law firms dedicated to improving the quality of indigent representation in criminal, juvenile, dependency, and mental health appeals.

When I became interested in criminal and dependnecy law, I knew right away I could only work for the defense. It never occurred to me to work for the prosecution or a governmental agency seeking to deprive a citizen of rights because I believe that to prosecute is to judge, whereas defending is an act of sympathy.

I have a son, two stepchildren, and a husband who speaks three languages and has lived on three continents. I feel lucky to live in San Francisco.
